Enterprises are adopting SAN technology to increase the availability of their mission critical data. SANs afford the enterprise a scalable network infrastructure in which to deploy their storage. Ironically, the very reason (i.e. scalability) for which enterprises are deploying SANs is in the classic undershoot. Undershoot is a term defined in Harvard Professor Clay Christensen's framework on innovation in market place. It is used to describe a technology or product, which does not currently meet all the customer's needs and where customers are expecting major innovations. This article attempts at exploring the various dimensions in which SAN scalability is in the "classic undershoot."
