Current backup strategies worked well during the past decade -- but they're no longer feasible as the amount of data continues to grow exponentially and a 24x7 global economy shrinks what is left of the backup and recovery window. Moving ahead, the backup application must be able to back up more data in less time. The problem will persist as long as the amount of enterprise data continues to grow rapidly and the time window for backup becomes non-existent. This paper identifies what data needs to be protected, outdated backup strategies and how to enhance backup strategies going forward. It specifically sites using the Sun StorEdge SAM-FS File System to keep up with data growth. (2002)
